The Foundation's unique partnership between academia and industry grew out of a shared concern over the lack of factual information about the health effects of alcohol for the vast majority of consumers who drink in moderation. The Foundation set out to enhance the status of alcohol research as a premier discipline and thereby attract the best thinkers to set the standard for excellence in the field.
Established scientists formulated epidemiologic studies to understand the effects of moderate consumption of alcohol. They also sought the root causes of problems associated with alcohol misuse. The accumulating body of scientific knowledge offers not only solutions to problems but also prevention approaches. Science has discovered that, in many instances, alcohol abuse is not the cause, but rather a symptom or indicator of deeper problems that need to be illuminated by further study.
Foundation donors have demonstrated visionary leadership through a long-term investment in this highly respected independent grant program. Thanks to their support of the Foundation’s annual fund program, ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research has been able to fund innovative, high-quality research on alcohol and health in the United States and Canada. ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research values its donor generosity.
To build on the impressive body of knowledge from our first thirty-plus years, it is imperative that we support the most promising research projects judged to have the highest scientific merit. Continued collaboration and generous support of the brewing industry combined with the infusion of new sources of funds will guarantee future promise in alcohol studies for the benefit of individuals and society.
