Alcohol consumption affects the lives of so many, from responsible drinkers to those who misuse.

1 in 10 faces a pattern of alcohol abuse. Nearly 40% of families have been touched by alcohol problems in a close relative.

Yet, alcohol research remains under funded compared to other illness categories such as cancer, heart disease, aging, or HIV, despite the potential to benefit a comparable number of lives:

Alcohol is not ranked in the top 20 federally funded medical research categories.
Alcohol research funding is low compared to the estimated impact in cost to individuals.
There is less spent on alcohol research per affected population than any other research category.
