Behavioral & Social Advisory Council

The Behavioral and Social Advisory Council is responsible for advising the Foundation regarding research in the behavioral and social sciences. Its members are internationally recognized authorities in the fields of epidemiology, sociology, psychological sciences, and public health.


The research supported in this area consists of studying factors associated with drinking patterns across the life span from adolescence through retirement and old age, cultural and transnational drinking practices, highway safety, and life-style influences on health. The result of this line of research is intended for developing strategies to prevent the misuse and abuse of alcohol.

Chair

Sherry H. Stewart, Ph.D.
Killam Research Professor

Dr. Stewart’s areas of expertise are in the comorbidity of alcohol disorders with other mental health disorders, and treatment matching. She holds an Investigator Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and serves as associate editor of the journal Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Kim Fromme, Ph.D.

Dr. Fromme is director of the university’s SAHARA (Studies on Alcohol, Health and Risky Activities) Lab, one of six simulated barroom facilities in the U.S.  Her program of research focuses on the etiology and prevention of alcohol abuse and associated negative consequences among adolescents and young adults.  Dr. Fromme has served on the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA) board of directors from June 2005-2009. 


Kent E. Hutchison, Ph.D.

Dr. Hutchison is currently Director of Neurogenetics Core at the MIND Research Network. The focus of Dr. Hutchison’s research is on the development of more effective pharmacotherapies that target the basic neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of addiction. He has served on several review committees for National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Addiction. 


Henry R. Kranzler, M.D.

Dr. Kranzler’s research focuses on the genetics and pharmacological treatment of alcohol and drug dependence and common co-morbid psychiatric disorders. He is Program Director for the Lowell P. Weicker, Jr. General Clinical Research Center.  He also serves as a research mentor for residents, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty for the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

 

Kenneth E. Leonard, Ph.D.

Dr. Leonard's research has focused on alcohol and marital/family processes, and alcohol and violence. He is a fellow in Division 50 of the American Psychological Association and an associate editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.


Edward Riley, Ph.D.

Dr. Riley’s research focuses on behavioral teratology and he has served as chair of the National Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects. He is the author of nearly 200 papers and reviews and serves on the Editorial Boards of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research and the Psychological Record.
